Go Vegan for Valentine’s Day: Coracao Confections
Valentine’s Day week is one of the biggest periods for chocolate purchases in the USA. Unfortunately, most of that chocolate comes mixed in with ingredients like milk and cow’s butter from penned in and suffering non-human animals and from cocoa/cacao plantations where the crops and workers are heavily sprayed with pesticides and the workers are underpaid (if paid at all) and heavily exploited. So, nothing sweet or luscious about that.
For you chocolate lovers, instead of conventional chocolate, I’d recommend Coracao Confections, a vegan chocolatier that uses ethically sourced, organic, and non-GMO ingredients to make their sweet chocolate treats.
Coracao makes use of coconut sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup or cane sugar (which often isn’t vegan and often involves the suffering of farm workers in the places where sugar cane is grown) and other premium ingredients to whip up its chocolate candies.
I first encountered, the Emeryville, California-based producer at their stand at the Berkeley Farmer’s Market, but you can buy their chocolates and candies online.
In terms of what they offer, their raw chocolate fudge is the best I’ve ever tasted. They also make a vegan caramel (made with yacon syrup) covered in chocolate and a coconut cashew yacon blondie dipped in chocolate that is fantastic!
Coracao Confections are definitely worth considering– especially if you are looking for Valentine’s Day treats (or sweets for any special occasion as they are pricey for everyday) that are made from ethically-produced, vegan and organic ingredients and if you are happy to support a small business.
